This is a handy little feature where you can lock your
glovebox. In 2003 when there were only SS sedans, there
was a non-locking, push-button style opening mechanism. In
2004 when the Sport-convertible came out, they introduced
a locking glovebox. For some reason, as of 2005, they
haven't commonized yet. I can only guess that the reason
for this disparity is that if you have a convertible with
the top down and thus no intrusion alarm, you can lock
something up in the glovebox.
This option is found on convertibles.

Installation Instructions Now.
When you order the lock, they will need your VIN,
and Sweden will code it to your key. This,
apparently, is required information in order to
order the part. You need to expensive decor
strip because it contains the interface between the
lock & the plunger. IE, it's not just a hole cut
into the button.
I got the cylinder & it was encased in a white
cover. Being an idiot, I cut it open to free the
lock. You don't need to. Inserting your key pulls
the tumblers into the cylinder, allowing it to
simply be pulled free.
Then, I proceeded to disassemble the entire lock
mechanism of the decor strip. After another couple
hours I think I got it back together. Idiot. Just
slide the lock cylinder (with key in) into the
mechanism far enough so it clicks. I think it's
supposed to be slightly indented. There's only 2
ways it will go in, so you might have to experiment
which way makes the different bevels line up.
Now, you have to remove the old one from the car.
You HAVE to remove the glovebox, but it's not hard.
There are 5 screws. 3 inside, and 2 on the outside
bottom. Unplug the A/C hose & lights & get it out of
the car.
Look on the decor strip mechanism black plastic
cylinder. There's a hole in the center. In the
vehicle, there's a screw that will go into it. Take
one of the glovebox screws & pre-thread the hole,
removing the screw when done. Trust me, it will
help.
Now, get a flashlight & look for where that screw
would be in the car. It's hard to see, and even
harder to get to. Remove that screw. Then push out
the attachment clips from the inside of the
glovebox. The old decor strip will pop right out.
Then, do just the reverse to fit the new one. You're
good to go. Remember the screw with the washer is
for the middle inside slotted hole. Other than that,
all screws used are identical.
As for how the lock actually works...
There is a simple plunger that extends. In the
non-locking version, it's in a fixed position. In
the locking version, it is able to be rotated 90°
out of the way so it doesn't engage the linkage to
release the door.
Insert key, rotate 90° & hear a click. Cylinder is
locked (plunger out of the way). Rotate back to
original position (it's spring loaded) & remove key.
then...
Insert key (do exactly the same thing, 90° the other
way) and it will engage the lock. |
